The Château Royal at Collioure • Mediterranean crossroad of history

Perched proudly on a rock, battered by the waves, stands the Château Royal of Collioure, its high silhouette carved out against the azure blue of the Mediterranean sky. Since the year 672 it has kept watch over the little Catalan port, defying the centuries.

Between the 13th and 15th centuries, it guarded the residence of the Kings of Majorca, rulers of a brief but glamorous reign over the Mediterranean of the Middle Ages.

From the 16th century onwards, the kings of Spain and France modified the summer palace into a fortress.

In the 20th century, a final witness to seven centuries of building work, the citadel was to be transformed into a detention centre for Spanish republicans.

A source of inspiration for painters (Matisse and Derain made it famous throughout the entire world), today it is also a site devoted to art, welcoming many exhibitions, (notably "The Marine Heritage” permanent exhibition), concerts and shows.
